[edit] Things to mention in this article

  • when did N first appear?
  • when did Microsoft finally add the so-called "standard" keyboard shortcuts to notepad? on my win98, Notepad is the ONLY app which doesn't respond to CTRL-S for save. Shoddy programming, and yet again, Microsoft not following its own rules. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tarquin (talkcontribs) 10:44, 3 November 2002

[edit] About adding the WINE/ReactOS "Notepad"

As you may or may not know, WINE developed a simple text editor that looks like Notepad. Later, ReactOS took it up and is improving it (though not to over-step boundaries of "notepad replacements") and translating it... (which WINE has later re-merged ReactOS' source, even though they're still not entirely interested in improving an intentionally-limited text editor)

So my real question comes in: Where do we fit in the open source (LGPL) version, if at all? Should there be two tables for the Microsoft one and the WINE/ReactOS one? Should they be together separated by a slash, or should only the Microsoft-created editor be included in the table?

[edit] Another Limitation

In addition to limit of a 64K file size, I have found that Notepad craps out (a technical term) at around 1K lines in the file. Has anyone else noticed this limitation? Two Halves, who has happily moved over to the UniRed text editor 22:42, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Open Source!

Oh my god are people really this against Microsoft that they need to make an open source alternative for Notepad? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.141.186.203 (talk • contribs) 15:33, 4 June 2006 (UTC).

Well, Notepad++ is actually a lot better. Bluemoose444 15:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] .LOG

Is it worthwhile putting in the .LOG trick? Sclozza 09:20, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Not a bad idea I think. May also wish to mention the undocumented 'feature' described here Jonohill 14:44, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
    • Is it really worthwhile to make note of an ironic bug?Sclozza 04:21, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Yes, I believe it is. This bug causes many other applications to behave in the same manner. -- jsimlo(talk, cont) 08:39, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] version

What is the latest version of Notepad available? I have 5.1 --Martin925 00:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

The latest version would be the one that has come out with the latest version of Windows. There really isn't a version "5.1" of Notepad--the "5.1" really refers to the version of Windows (Windows XP). Jason McHuff 07:05, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] George Bush Reference?

Please, stop adding the section of George Bush Reference. This bug, as you call it, is the same bug as described in the section of Notepad#Unicode detection. We do not need to mention it twice, just because it also works with the name of Bush. Especially, when I can make it work with your name too. Read the section of Notepad#Unicode detection closely, before you start writting again. -- jsimlo(talk|cont) 13:17, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Change title of article to "Windows Notepad"

Since the aspect of "Notepad" is too broad, I think the article title should be changed to maintain its exclusiveness with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. --65.8.131.134 23:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Strong Agree. Why should we let anyone "steal" a common word in Wikipedia? DCDuring 22:24, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Patronising tone

Does this article really have to be written from the point of view of someone who has never used a text editor? Chris Cunningham 14:50, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

I agree, I have an issue with
One notable feature of Notepad is that it does not support formatting of any kind - if text is copied from a web page and pasted into a word processor, the formatting and embedded metadata comes along with the text, and can be difficult to remove. However, if text is copied from a formatted web site, pasted into Notepad, then copied again from Notepad before being pasted into a destination program, Notepad will have stripped all of the formatting.
Isn't this more of a description of how the clipboard provides data; and also the lack of formatting features is a characteristic of plain text editors ... (duh :D )
Surely this para. can just be removed? 118.90.9.218 (talk) 00:02, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Support removing the para. That's what a plain text editor is. :) - xpclient talk 08:26, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pasting without formatting

Practically all word processors include a "Paste Special..." feature, which allows pasting of text while removing formatting. While some users use Notepad to emulate this, it should be noted that the word processor includes this feature in the first place. 146.94.214.21 19:52, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] EXTREMELY strange glitch??

No joke here, dont delete it. Open notepad, type "love tmk and mario" (NO JOKE, THIS IS VERY REAL) Save it. Close it and open it again. Tell me why the f### that happens. For me it transformed the phrase into this: 潬敶琠歭愠摮洠牡潩 In reality they are square characters. 189.28.221.57 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 22:11, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

read the Bush hid the facts article. You must have chinese fonts installed on your computer to see 潬敶琠歭愠摮洠牡潩. But that is weird. Matthew 13:36, 19 March 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 10minnickm (talkcontribs)
