[edit] Notch (Geography)

A notch is a natural landform caused when the original rock is eroded where the sea level is. There are three main ways for the rock to be eroded.

  • One way for it to be eroded is by waves from the sea crushing the rock, and wearing the softer parts away slowly (underneath the sea level, the water doesn't have enough power to erode it).
  • Another way is when sediments of rock or other objects crash against the rock.
  • It can also be worn away after animals (e.g. birds) look for food on the side of the rock.

A notch can be the start of a sea stack, platform, or cliff.

It might be worth noting that a sea stack, platform and cliff is usually started by a cave, a landform also caused by erosion but of a deeper depth than a notch, with 'walls' surrounding three sides of it.
