[edit] Background

Notre Dame High School is a collaboration effort between the Sisters of Notre Dame and the Cristo Rey Network. Both groups strive to bring more valuable education to the underprivileged. The coinciding mission lead the groups to the north of Boston, inner city area of Lawrence, MA which has a high population of first generation Hispanic-Americans. Upon its opening, it became the third high school in Lawrence along with Lawrence High School and Central Catholic High School

As a part of the Cristo Rey Network, all students are assigned an internship at a nearby business. Each class has a day between Tuesday and Friday wherein which they are taken to work by school vans. Mondays are rotated among classes each week. The school opened in 2004 with a freshmen class of about 80 students. Because of internship scheduling and premature building rennovation and faculty, freshman students were the only students admited and the school gradually increased to full capacity over the next four years. Each consecutive year following introduced a new set of freshmen while the inaugural class pushed forward as the school's first set of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The school's first class of 51 seniors graduated June 7th of 2008 with a college acceptance rate of 100%. [1] [2] [3]

[edit] Building

The school is housed in the renovated building that held all girls St. Mary's High School for most of the 1900's. The school closed in 1996, sending students to the then all boys, neighboring Central Catholic High School. For a time after the building also held North Central Lawrence public elementary school and Notre Dame Education Center for adults.

The building in its entirety has three parts. Looking Directly at Notre Dame High School from its parking lot, the right side, including the gymnasium, is the long time home of St. Mary of the Assumption grade school. At the Center is the high school and to the left are school offices, converted from a nun monastery that existed during the time of St. Mary's High School. The building directly faces St. Mary of the Assumption church and has an under street tunnel that connects both buildings. Major renovation is scheduled for 2008 including new windows, heating/cooling system and elevator. [1]
