Notion (software)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Notion is a computer software program oriented around composition in the orchestral setting created by NOTION Music, a company located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Notion was created for use on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. NOTION Music also offers programs called Protege (similar to Notion with limited functionality) and Progression (a composition program oriented around guitar and rock music).

[edit] Operation

Users of Notion can write for up to 128 instruments in a single score. The sample library used for playback in Notion was recorded at Abbey Road by the London Symphony Orchestra. The interface includes a transport, an editing section, and a tool bar (consisting of expressions, note selection, and techniques). Note entry utilizes shortcuts for every element easily associated through mnemonics or visual appearance. Notion also utilizes an audio mixer which allows the user to determine volume level, pan amount, and decay amount.

[edit] Capabilities

Notion automatically takes care of many of the more mechanical aspects of music notation, such as stem direction and alignment of different rhythmic values. Users can also use the playback of custom key signatures, time signatures, and quarter tones.
