Not the End of the World is Christopher Brookmyre's third novel. It is also his first book which does not involve Jack Parlabane, Christopher Brookmyre's most used character, and the first set outside of Scotland, being set in Los Angeles instead. It is about Larry Freeman, A LAPD cop, who has to help the security of a film festival called the American Feature Film Marketing (AFFM) while investigating how a boat lost four of its crew and its submarine with no evidence to tell him what happened. It also tells us about a Scottish photographer Steff Kennedy who travelled to LA to visit the AFFM.

[edit] Trivia

This is the first non Jack Parlabane novel that Christopher Brookmyre wrote.

This is Brookmyre's first novel set outside of Scotland. Brookmyre himself used to work in LA.

Larry Freeman (just referred to as Larry) was mentioned in Brookmyre's second novel, Country of the Blind, as Jack Parlabane went to LA for a while and he and Larry became friends, which prompted Larry to take Jack to a LAPD target range. It is also easy to presume that he is the 'Larry' in Quite Ugly One Morning who saves Parlabane's life, although his characterisation is somewhat different than in Not the End of the World.

The very final words in the novel (bar epilogue) is a character saying "It's not the end of the world".
