Not Real

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not Real was a radio program on WKPX, a high school radio station in Broward County, Florida. Not Real was on the air from 1999 to 2006. The show was created and originally hosted by Andrew Felson. The program featured comedy, alternative rock and punk rock music.

The show was later co-hosted by Wayne Sladek, who joined the show in 2000 and did all of the programming for the Punk Rock section of the show.

In 2001 Derrick Heidinger joined the cast and his many different voices and characters became popular with listeners; Haggis a Scottish curmudgeon, and Farmer Brown a backwoods farmer were the two most popular characters.

In 2002, with the rise in the show's ratings, Heidinger became the show's host and executive producer. The show dropped its punk rock aspect and expanded on comedy segments, plus had a new cast of students.

Not Real utilized the services of the largest cast for a radio program in WKPX history.

Despite the highest Arbitron ratings in the station's history, Not Real was the subject of an investigation by Broward County Public Schools, the owner of WKPX, in Spring 2003, after complaints of "Unacceptable Content" and a "...frat party atmosphere" by some listeners. As a result, subsequent Not Real episodes were screened in advance for content and no further action was taken by the School Board. The cast that brought about the investigation moved on after 2003.

Not Real featured a mostly female cast from 2004-2006 and was not renewed after the 2006 Summer season.

[edit] Featured Segments

  • Haggis's Corner: Always involved an angry, unintelligible rant between Haggis and Winston, a snobby, British type character voiced by Felson, with Winston usually chiming in at the end.
  • The Adventures of Capt. Stinkypants and AEIOU&sometimesY: Narrated by Sladek, featured Heidinger as the Capt. and Felson as the sidekick. Involved squeaky voices and silly tasks, usually ending in failure.
  • Original Compositions: A seriously read piece that ultimately made no sense from its very inception. Here is an example:

Once there was a badger who decided it was time to fix time using a spork named Leroy. The clock who had been going to the ice cream shop looking for pants to use as a garden tool had not been feeling too well so he and the wooden moose head went on a trip before they could be delt with by Leroy and the badger, who now had put on a hat made of ants.

  • Quote of the Day: Featured a random quote, read by the cast members on a rotating basis.
  • Weird News Stories: A less-frequent segment, cast members would read real news stories that had a comedic or bizarre twist to them
