Talk:Northfoto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article should remain because it does not differ in any way, shape or form from other similiar articles on photo agencies, such as Zuma Press or Corbis.
This article is notable because it describes Northfoto, the second web-based photo agency in Eastern Europe. This means that Northfoto was only the second web-based photo agency to exist in history in Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Slovenia.
That is a large area of Europe. It continues to remain the leading source of news/ stock imagery in this part of the world.
The first web-based photo agency in this part of the world, Red Dot, was created by the same person who founded Northfoto.
This is no insignificant event, considering that during Communism there were no private media in any of the above mentioned countries. The internet was something out of science fiction for a vast majority of the population until very recently. Until Northfoto and Red Dot existed, newly formed independent media were not able to purchase news or stock photography from private sources. They only had the ministry of information.
Mark Milstein's creation of both photo agencies allowed for the "explosion" of independent media which these former Soviet states experienced between 1999 and 2002.
Photography, in case you aren't aware, is an integral part of any publication (print or web-based), and media's ability to purchase pictures without interference from the government is a major event in any county's evolution from Communism to democracy.
