Talk:North Valley (San Jose)

[edit] Needs more research - name is real
North Valley is a neighborhood name I have heard from realtors and few others. I haven't heard it generally accepted as the name of a specific neighborhood. As the clock approaches one year that this page has been tagged unreferenced, I'll add a note here for other editors to leave some time for local editors to research this some more. For example, if we find that it's generally co-existent with Berryessa, San Jose, California then we can make a redirect. Ikluft (talk) 22:01, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- There is a source of info I intend to check to verify whether the city of San Jose considers any neighborhoods outside of Berryessa to be called "North Valley". At the next meeting of San Jose RACES, I'll check the neighborhood diagrams on the wall of the city's emergency operations center. If there is no "North Valley", then we can do away with this page. If there is, then the diagram may give me more hints specifically where else to look for online documentation. That should be available to me within a couple weeks. - Scratch one attempt to verify the usage of the name. After visiting the SJ EOC, I don't think the city uses this as the name of any neighborhood. So this looks like an informal nickname for the Berryessa neighborhood area, and may include part or all of gthe City of Milpitas. I think as a listing for a neighborhood of San Jose, this name is not standing on a strong foundation unless someone finds better info. Ikluft (talk) 00:20, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Research says...
I can't find any reference for North Valley as a neighborhood of San Jose. I removed the template and category claiming this is a neighborhood of San Jose. As the article claims, it appears to be an informal name for the Berryessa district of San Jose and the city of Milpitas. Unless someone comes up with something new soon, we should consider nominating this page for deletion. Ikluft (talk) 00:34, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
It is clear to me that North Valley was not equivalent to Berryessa in the period during which I lived there, 1978 - 1986. I specifically asked the Realtor if the house was in Berryessa, and he said no; he produced a map showing North Valley to lie between Berryessa on the south and Milpitas on the north. At that time it was pretty clear to me that Milpitas was Milpitas, not North Valley. Although we were in the Berryessa School District, people from Berryessa proper did not seem to feel that we were from their area. Because I suspected that North Valley was an artifact of the board of Realtors, I always told people that we were from the part of San Jose that everyone thinks is Milpitas. If they asked where exactly, I said we lived near Capitol and Cropley; the usual reply was "But that is Milpitas, isn't it?" I don't recall anyone thinking it was Berryessa. But that was then. Based on my experience then, I am surprised to hear now that North Valley and Berryessa are considered equivalent, at least in Wikipedia. By the way, I was unimpressed with McCormack's Guide, which seemed to lump many neighborhoods together. For example, they seem to throw Alum Rock into East Valley or Berryessa; it's a distinct place. - I live in that area now. I can't find a consistent online definition on any anyone's web site. Some realtors do mention it and have parts of Milpitas and/or Berryessa in their definitions. As I've looked around, it just confirmed my suspicion that it's no more than an informal name. I've only ever heard North Valley from realtors and their listings/advertising. I even looked at a map of neighborhood names on the wall of the San Jose Emergency Operations Center and found no North Valley there either. Anyway, there's nowhere to fit between Berryessa and Milpitas because Berryessa is considered to be the part of SJ Council District 4 east of I-880. (District 4 consists of Alviso, North San Jose and Berryessa.) Even though a few locals know the term North Valley, the fact is that Wikipedia's culture and rules want a level of online verifiability (see WP:VERIFY) which the informal term North Valley doesn't live up to. I've looked around - the definition isn't there. The informal definition isn't "notable" or verifiable by Wikipedia expectations. Time to give up. The article has to go away. If merging it into Berryessa gets challenged then the remaining alternative would be to just nominate the North Valley article for deletion. Ikluft (talk) 15:19, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Merge to Berryessa proposed
I looked around the web. The best reference I could find says North Valley is an informal nickname for the Berryessa district of San Jose. I proposed to merge this page into that one. Ikluft (talk) 18:12, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
