North America is a continent located in the Earth's Western Hemisphere, bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the southeast by the Gulf of Mexico, and on the south and west by the North Pacific Ocean. It is linked to South America by Central America. It covers an area of about 24.5 million km² (9.46 million square miles), or about 4.8 percent of the planet's surface. As of July 2002, its population was estimated at more than 514.6 million. It is the 3rd largest continent in area, after Asia and Africa, and is 4th in population, after Asia, Africa, and Europe.
