In 2005, Nortel acquired PEC Solutions, Inc.. Now known as Nortel Government Solutions Incorporated, or NGS, which specializes in information technology and telecommunications services to the federal, state and local governments of the United States. Nortel brought together in this separate subsidiary, all operations related to sensitive technologies and services for government, and the defense sector.
Nortel Government Solutions was selected in July 2007 to replace the telephone network in the U.S. Social Security Administration at over 1,600 sites and deploy a multimedia contact center supporting about 55,000 agents. The draft VoIP is one of the largest in the world ($300 million).
