Norwich Cinema City
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cinema City is an Art film or art house cinema located in the city of Norwich in Norfolk, England.
Cinema City was founded in the mid-Sixties. Ten years later it became the first ever Regional Film Theatre in England. Cinema City has now returned to its original premises on St Andrew Street, after a long rebuild during which the cinema relocated to Norwich Playhouse near by. The cinema is now managed and booked by City Screen Limited which operates a national chain of 'art house' cinemas, called Picturehouse.
[edit] The New Cinema City
Cinema City has been rebuilt by marrying the medieval to the modern while maintaining the character and intimacy of the original. There are three screens, comfortable seats and state-of-the-art sound and projection. You enter the cinema through the old front entrance, into the foyer fitted with a new box office, and either take the lift down to the basement floor, or walk through a new courtyard lobby on your left where you will find Screens Two and Three. You enter the auditoria at the back; Screen Two has nearly 100 seats and Screen Three just over 60, and both have similar-sized screens to the one in the old auditorium. A couple of metres were dug down to create space for the new auditoria, which has been swung around 180 degrees with the screens backing onto St Andrews Street. Screen One, with nearly 200 seats, is located on the first floor, and it is equipped with digital projection as well as 35mm. There is also a new lobby at this level situated in a 17th-Century panelled room. It is a quiet place for meeting friends with comfortable chairs and sofas looking out on St Andrews. The bar and restaurant area are unique, the atmosphere of the magnificent 16th-Century hall has been preserved and, in addition, the courtyard now benefits from a glass canopy. The adjacent 14th-Century vaulted rooms, the oldest part of the building, will also open to the public for the first time, which will form elegant new dining areas.
