Nortonville, California

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nortonville, California was founded by Noah Norton in 1855[1]

The town site was previously a coal mining site with home to many Welsh miners.[1] In 1885, the owner of the coal mine moved all the coal miners from Nortonville to Black Diamond, Washington Territory, due to lack of funds to run the mine.[1] Currently what had left behind at Nortonville is a deserted area with an old Nortonville Cemetery.[1] Four other coal mining towns were established in the same district: Somersville, Stewartville, West Hartley and Judsonville.[1]

[edit] Location

Nortonville is located on Somersville Road just outside the city of Antioch in Contra Costa County. The town site is now part of the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.
