[edit] Teams

Northwood Middle School now, unlike previous years, is no longer divided into teams. The cause is the construction of new schools in the district, which is leading to fewer students in each school.

[edit] Academics

Northwood has extensive training in the five core academic subjects; English (Language Arts), Literature, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Other than the core subjects, Northwood Middle School has "Exploratory" classes which train the students in other life skills. These classes include Art, Career Exploration, General Music, Health, PE, Technology, and World Languages (German).

[edit] Laptop Grant

Northwood Middle School was chosen for a grant in 2006 (along with six others from the state of Illinois), allowing the students of the school to receive laptops. These Gateway laptops are a test to see if the presence of computers in a child's education will stimulate learning. The first to receive the laptops were the sixth graders 2006-2007, and every sixth grader from there on to attend Northwood will as well. These students will then keep these laptops until they leave for high school.

[edit] Sports and Afterschool activities

Northwood, like most Middle schools, has sports teams including both boys and girls basketball teams, cheerleading and poms, cross country (track) football, volleyball, and wrestling. The Northwood mascot is the Wally the Warhawk, and therefore each team above is known by the name "Warhawks." Their team colors are blue and white. On some occasions, a soccer team has been organized.

Some main school events involving sports include the Pumpkin Run, held in October, where students from each grade participate in a run through nearby subdivisions. Another event is the Olympic Day, which occurs in May. Every homeroom class has their own team, who compete in events such as tug-o-war, discus throw, long jump, 50, 100, 200, and 800 meter dashes, as well as others.

Northwood school also has other extracurricular activities, like Symphonic and Warhawk bands, Jazz band, Chorus for all grades, a school play, and Challenge Corps. The student council decides on the organization of clubs like the art and chess clubs. Northwood, as well as Creekside Middle School (also in Woodstock) frequently have themed dances, according to the time. Pep assemblies and other performances are occasionally held at this school.
