[edit] Northwestern Colts Athletic Legends
Detroit-Northwestern High School has enjoyed a long and storied athletic tradition. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the Colts dominated interscholastic competition statewide in a variety of sports.
Coach Bert Maris led the Northwestern swimming and diving program to three consecutive Michigan High School Athletic Association team titles (1925 through 1927). In 1930, the Colt swimming and diving team - coached by Leo Maas - won another MHSAA championship trophy; Maas also led the school to five consecutive city league titles (1933 through 1937).
Northwestern remains the only Detroit public high school to win a state championship in the sport of swimming and diving.
The Colts also boast an impressive record in the sport of track and field.
During the same year Bert Maris led Northwestern to a state championship in swimming and diving, he teamed with Coach Warren Hoyt in leading Northwestern to the 1925 MHSAA title in track and field. Coach Malcom Weaver and his Colts were winners of the state track and field championships in 1927, 1929 and 1930.
The record also shows that Northwestern High School won MHSAA championship trophies in the sport of tennis (1927) and cross country (1929).
