Northport, situated at Port Klang Malaysia, is owned and operated by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, a fully Malaysian-owned and one of the largest private port operating companies in the region. The parent company of Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (NMB) is NCB Holdings Berhad (NCB), a transport conglomerate listed on the local bourse, also owns the largest container road haulage company in Malaysia.
Northport comprises dedicated and modern multipurpose port facilities and services located at two locations- in Northport, Southpoint or conventional cargo handling, and in Northport where the state-of-the-art container handling facilities are located. Northport Logistics further adds value to the business entity.

[edit] Container Services
Consists of three dedicated container terminals, namely CT1, CT2 and CT3 which are fully equipped with state-of-the-art handling equipment and facilities to meet the growing demand for container services. The three terminals offer a combined quay length close to 3km and a depth alongside of 11.5 to 15 meters which are fully capable of accommodating vessels up to 120,000 displacement tonnes. The landside and container handling operations are supported by an array of quay cranes, rubber tyred gantry cranes, straddle carriers, prime movers, trailers, forklifts and high stackers.
The wide and extensive connectivity provided by leading global shipping lines has helped Northport to leverage and emerge as a major regional transshipment hub port. Northport now offers more links to worldwide ports than any other ports in Malaysia and has emerged as one of the most important gateway ports in the world.
There are three dedicated container terminals fully equipped with state of the art handling equipment and facilities at Northport. The three terminals offer a combined quay length close to 3km and a depth alongside from 10 to 15 metres and are fully capable of berthing the vessels up to a 120,000 displacement tonnes.
[edit] Container Terminal 1&2 (CT1 & CT2)
Container Terminal 1 draws a quay length of 1,079 metres and stretches linearly to Container Terminal 2 (CT2) which offers another 1,300 metres of quay line. The two terminals are equipped with 27 shoreside gantry cranes, including 8 super post panamax cranes. The state-of-the-art shoreside cranes offer high productivity on par with standards recorded at leading global ports.
[edit] Container Terminal 3 (CT3)
Completed in March 2005, is the show-piece of Northport as it is the latest addition to meet the growing demand for container handling facilities at the port. The new terminal which offers a quayline of 534 metres and a draft alongside of 15 metres is designed to meet the growing demand for mega size ships that require longer quay line and deeper draft. CT3 is supported by a fleet of 5 shoreside super post panamax cranes.

[edit] Conventional Services
Non-containerised cargoes are handled at two facilities in Northport - a dedicated conventional cargo terminal in Northport, Southpoint and the conventional cargo terminals in Northport for break bulk, liquid and dry bulk cargoes. Southpoint, formerly known as Southport, is the oldest section of Northport. Southpoint which has undergone massive rehabilitation and renewal offers a very broad range of facilities and services for handling a variety of conventional cargoes including RO-RO shipments such as vehicles and machineries.
[edit] Northport Conventional Terminal
Additional facilities for handling break bulk and conventional cargoes are available at Northport where there are dedicated terminals fully equipped with direct pipelines, belts facilitate loading/unloading of cargo.
[edit] Northport Southpoint
Northport Southpoint, formerly known as Southport, is the oldest section of Northport. Southpoint which has undergone massive rehabilitation and renewal offers a very broad range of facilities and services for handling of a variety of cargoes.
Southpoint caters for ships serving the short-sea trades in the region as well as offers facilities for handling of liquid bulk cargo, especially palm oil and rubber latex and dry bulk cargo. Southpoint also handles ro-ro cargo such as vehicles and machineries.
Designated as a Free Commercial Zone in February 2004, Southpoint offers itself as a customs-free cargo consolidation centre for re-shipment of cargoes shipped in conventional form from neighbouring and riverine ports.
Southpoint has eight berths (from Berth 1 to Berth 7A). The first four berths have a depth between 9 m and 10.5 m to cater for ocean-going vessels up to 40,000 displacement tonnes. Berths 5 to 7A draw depths of about 6m can accommodate coastal ships of up to 6,000 displacement tonnes.
Other facilities include eight warehouses, a container yard and a fully equipped multipurpose yard with a total space of 35,000 sq.metres that serves as freight station for consolidation of conventional cargo into containers. Containers from Southpoint can be moved across to the container terminals at Northport to secure mainline connections to worldwide ports.
[edit] Breakbulk
Break bulk cargoes such as iron, steel, timber, plywood, machineries, ro-ro and livestock are handled at the Break-Bulk Cargo Terminal. The quayline at this Terminal is 1,004.2 metres and depth alongside of 12.5 metres.
[edit] Dry Bulk
Dry bulk cargo is handled at the Dry Bulk Cargo Terminal which has a total of three berths with a total quay length of 0.6km and has an annual capacity of 2.5 million fwt with a maximum depth alongside of 12.5 metres.
The terminal, which can accommodate vessels of up to 80,000 displacement tones, can handle cargos such as fertilizers, grains like maize, soya beans and rice, feedmeal, palm kernel and chemicals with maximum rated capacity of up to 250 tonnes per hour.

The dedicated Liquid Bulk Cargo Terminal at Northport has a total of four berths with a total quay length of 0.8km and has an annual capacity of 5.1 million fwt, with a maximum depth alongside 780 metres. Types of cargo handled include liquid chemicals, petroleum products, palm oil and crude oil. The terminal can accommodate vessels of up to 60,000 tonnes displacement.

In recognition of the international end-to-end supply chain development, Northport has envisaged an important role as part of this development. Northport has invested heavily in downstream on-dock supporting facilities, products and services. Among these are the dedicated logistics business unit called Northport Distripark which develops and offers value proposition in not only being a Regional Distribution Centre but also both as an International Procurement Centre and a Multi Country Consolidation Centre.
Northport Vehicle Terminal Centre (NVTC) : Meeting Trade Demands Northport with a vision to be a leading multipurpose port in the region also offers RORO services apart from Container and Conventional services. A state-of-the-art Vehicle Terminal Centre has also been developed in order to enhance the RORO Terminal value chain.
Northport has allocated more than 10 acres for this purpose. The import/export Vehicle Transit Centre is strategically located on-dock to meet the domestic, regional and international automotive trades. Northport aspiration is to continue expansion and to be the Asia-Pacific auto trading hub.
Global Halal Hub : The Halal Factor Being a Halal Hub is one of the identified growth areas by the Malaysian Government, central to the Industrial Master Plan 3. As the only Malaysian port having the most extensive global shipping connectivity, Northport, at Port Klang offers the critical link in the transport and logistics chain for Halal products to the manufacturers and producers in their global market outreach. Well factored in high-growth, Northport can reac out to 1 billion global Muslim-consumers, manufacturers and producers.
Northport is fast becoming a Halal Hub in the region offering value-added services to all its traditional customers worldwide. Malaysia's national carrier, MISC Bhd has pioneered the 1st Halal Service in the world and Northport is one of the important ports of call. [1]

Pilotage is compulsory under the Port Klang Authority operating rules. Northport's Marine Services Division is the premier provider of pilotage and tug services within Port Klang. Northport provides both services to its own customers as well as to customers of other operators when required. [1]

The Client Access System (CAS) is an extension of the Container Tracking System (CONTRAK). The CAS allows Northport's valued customers real-time racking of the status of their shipments in the terminal from the comfort of their offices. [2]
