Northpark Mall (Mississippi)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Northpark Mall is a two-level enclosed regional shopping mall on County Line Road in the city of Ridgeland, Mississippi a suburb of Jackson, Mississippi. This mall was built in 1985 with 4 anchors JC Penney, McRae's, Gayfers, and Dillard's and quickly killed off the already-suffering Jackson Mall in Jackson, Mississippi, which opened in 1969 with 2 anchors JC Penney and Gayfers, both of which relocated to Northpark Mall in 1985. Jackson Mall has since been redeveloped as a medical mall, providing health-care for the inner city urban poor. Northpark Mall's direct competition, Metrocenter Mall, Jackson, built in 1978 with 4 anchors Sears, Gayfers, McRae's and Dillard's, located in southwest Jackson, is the largest mall in the state of Mississippi and in the late '90s, due to the perception of crime in the city, the Metrocenter began to suffer while Northpark was riding the economic boom. Just when things could get no worse, the big blow came in April 1999 when one of its major anchors Gayfers closed due to the merge with Dillard's. Another big blow came in 2004 when Dillard's announced they were closing the Metrocenter Mall, Jackson location and relocating to Northpark. In 2007, perhaps on a rebound, the Metrocenter Mall announced a new anchor to fill the former Gayfers space vacated in 1999. Burlington Coat Factory opened in Metrocenter Mall, Jackson in September 2007 with great fanfare attracting customers within 100 mile radius. Northpark Mall also has a cinema, originally a 10-screen but later expanded to a 14-screen state of the art cinema owned by Regal Entertainment Group's United Artists Theatres located in the back of the mall.
