[edit] Laptop Program

[edit] Laptop Usefulness and Future Plans

The Laptop Program is available at Northland Christian School for grades 8 to 12. In these grade levels, each student gets a laptop for each year use until he or she graduates or withdraws from the school. Sixth and Seventh graders gets access to these laptops as well, but only for school's use. Starting in the 2008-2009 school year, seventh graders gets a full access of laptops to take to each class, but only for school use. They are not allowed to take the laptops home unless with permission. According to the Northland Christian School's website, it states that, "NCS is in agreement with the concepts and ideas detailed in our country’s new National Education Plan that every student needs to learn in new ways and develop 21st Century skills. The only way to insure that students have the opportunity to learn in ways that benefit them, and to develop and apply these new skills in every class, is for every student to have access to the right instructional tools twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week."

[edit] Controversy and Critism of the Laptop Program

Teachers have complained that students are playing online games and hacking into systems while class is in session. Technology staff have reported an extreme number of broken and abused laptops from middle school than high school. There are very few reports of computer abuse from high school students. In middle school, there has been abusive problems from students such as the commonly problems of broken screens, missing key pads on the keyboard, sending out viruses to other students, hacking into computer systems, and especially more of cyberbullying. Parents and teachers have demanded the school to place a strict rule on the abuse of laptops such as a fine for each damage caused intentionally or suspension from computer use or In-School Suspension. Parents do not want the laptop program to be taken away from middle school students like the Pasadana ISD problems with laptop repairs from middle school students. Parents thought that the laptop program would be efficient in enhancing the 21st century skills for current students, but want stricter rules to be placed to reduce the amount of abuse that students caused.
