The Northern Film School is part of the Leeds Metropolitan University faculty of Film, Television and Performing Arts. It is one of the largest full-time film schools in the UK (The largest being The NFTS), it is situated in the city of Leeds.

As far back as the late sixties, the nationally-recognised Leeds Polytechnic Film Unit launched the careers of such luminaries of the British film Industry. Past students have been Peter Cattaneo and Mark Herman.[1] The Polytechnic changed to The Northern Film School, offering new courses in Screenwriting and Film production. Another graduate of the film school is Faisal A. Qureshi who is now currently lecturing at the school.[2]
The school later merged with Leeds Metropolitan University, but still retained its status as a film school. Unlike the larger film schools like the National Film School and the London Film School, the merge offered students a film school experience at an affordable university fee. Former Head of the School, Ian MacDonald says
The industry has no argument about supporting the National Film and TV School which has a far higher income per student than film schools in the private or Higher Education sector...How do we do it in HE?
...We raid pots of money, within and outside our institutions. We pull in European funding. Etc.
[edit] Regional Influence
The Northern Film School is the largest of its kind in the north of England and is continuing to attribute to the British film industry.
The school has close working relationships with the UK Film Council, Screen Yorkshire, ITV Yorkshire, Channel 4 and Working Title Films and participates in local, regional, national and international film festivals.[4]
The school also sponsors the Local Young Film-maker award, an event included in the local Young People's Film Festival.[5]
The school has recently had student work screened during the 2007 Leeds International Film Festival. A short animation called The Bench had its first festival premiere during the showcase.[6]

In 2005, the school moved into a new facility in the Electric Press building on Millennium Square in Leeds. The building holds two studios fitted for shooting on student built sets. It also has film-making equipment ranging from 16mm film, Digital Video and High Definition Digital Video.
Being situated in Leeds, it is also close to ProVision Equipment Hire and the Leeds Studios. Past student productions have made use of these companies, as well as the surrounding landscape of the Yorkshire countryside.
Screen Yorkshire is also based in Leeds. A short distance away from the school.
