Northern Cape is a Geographical Unit of the Wine of Origin classification of South African wine. Corresponding to the province of Northern Cape it contains the district of Douglas and the wards of Hartswater, Lower Orange (Benede Oranje) and Rietrivier Free State.
[edit] Style
Along the valley of the Orange River, the river creates a cool microclimate that traditionally has favoured white wines. A lot of Colombard is grown.
[edit] History
This area was little visited by Europeans until diamonds were found at Kimberley. Traditionally the Orange River has grown table grapes, being home to most of the national sultana crop. However more interest is being shown in wine.
