[edit] History
Northeastern International Airways was established in 1980 and commenced operations in February 1982 using Douglas DC-8 aircraft. The main market was to fly sun seekers from the northeastern USA to Florida. In 1983 four Boeing 727-21 were added and those were painted in a cloud color scheme (see link bellow to pictures of aircraft). Northeaster expanded rapidly in 1984 and it was the second airline in the USA to acquire the Airbus A300 (Eastern Airlines was the other one). With the A300s New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco were served.
The rapid expansion brought upon a financial crisis at the end of 1984 and the A300s were returned to the lessors. The route network was also scaled down and further cutbacks followed. By January 1985, Northeastern sought protection from its creditors by going Chapter 11 bankruptcy but operations were sparse during 1985 and the company was liquidated during 1986.[1]
