[edit] History

The Northeast Ohio Conference began play in the 2007-2008 school year. It was founded by the merger of the Pioneer and Western Reserve Conferences, with eight schools coming from each. Two other schools, Garfield Heights and Lakewood, also joined the conference. Both were members of the Lake Erie League.

[edit] Pioneer Conference

The Pioneer Conference was formed in 1977. It had six original members: Brecksville, Brunswick, Cloverleaf, North Royalton, Strongsville, and Wadsworth. Seeing the success of the league, the two high schools in the Berea City School District - Berea and Midpark - joined in 1979.

The conference had eight schools through most of the the 1980s and 1990s, with only minor changes. Wadsworth left the conference in 1983 and was replaced by Medina two years later. North Ridgeville replaced Cloverleaf in 1997.

In 2003, the Pioneer Conference briefly expanded to twelve schools as the three high schools in the Parma City School District, as well as Elyria, joined the league. The schools were split into two divisions of six teams each for most sports. The conference went back to eight teams upon the formation of the West Shore League in 2005, as North Ridgeville joined that league. Also in 2005, Berea, Brecksville, and Midpark joined the Southwestern Conference, replacing schools from that league who moved to the WSC. After 2005, no schools joined or left the Pioneer Conference until 2007, when the Northeast ohio Conference was formed.
