Northampton Community College is a community college that grants associate degrees, certificates and diplomas in close to 100 fields including arts and humanities, business and technology, and allied health. The College is one of the largest providers of workforce training, adult literacy programs, and non-credit classes in a four-county region.[citation needed] It is the only community college in Pennsylvania to offer on-campus housing.
Northampton has grown rapidly. Although the College now serves more than 32,000 students a year in credit and non-credit programs, it has maintained a low student/faculty ratio (22/1), and students give it high ratings for personal attention.
The College's main campus is located in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania, 90 miles west of New York City and 60 miles north of Philadelphia. Northampton also has a campus in Monroe County and satellite sites on the south side of Bethlehem, in the Lehigh Valley Industrial Park, in Bartonsville and Mount Pocono, and in Pike and Wayne counties. A large distance education program makes it possible for students to earn degrees at Northampton from anywhere in the world.
Keeping quality education affordable and accessible has been a priority at Northampton since it was founded in 1967. Tuition and fees for residents of Northampton County are $100 per credit hour in 2007-08. The College awards more than $14.5 million in financial aid each year and disburses more scholarship aid than any other community college in Pennsylvania.
One in four graduates of public high schools in Northampton County and one in six graduates of public high schools in Monroe County choose to begin their higher education at NCC, as students call it. The student body is diverse in terms of age, ethnicity, income and academic interest, and this is a matter or pride for many students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Approximately 35% of students continue their education immediately after graduation. The rest enter the workforce. The College's placement rate consistently tops 90%.
