North Tyneside mayoral election, 2005
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elections for North Tyneside's directly-elected mayor took place on 05 May 2005 on the same day as the United Kingdom General Election.
John Harrison, of the Labour Party, won. Although many expected the former mayor, Linda Arkley of the Conservative Party to win, the high turnout of Labour voters for the general election meant that she was beaten by 1,002 votes, after taking account of second preference votes.
If no candidate received half of all the first choice votes counted, then all but the top two candidates dropped out of the election and the second choice votes from the eliminated candidates were counted. This is what happened in this election. Linda Arkley and John Harrison held the top two positions, but as neither had 50% of the vote, the second choice votes of Dr Joan Harvey and Robert Nigel Batten were added to their current tallies. As a result, John Harrison won overall, even though Linda Arkley held the most votes after the first round.
