North Tyneside Council mayoral election, 2009
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elections for North Tyneside's directly-elected mayor are likely to take place on 11 June 2009 on the same day as the Elections to the European Parliament.
It is unknown whether John Harrison of the Labour Party, the incumbent mayor, is likely to stand again. The Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats are both very likely to field candidates.
If no candidate receives half of all the first choice votes counted, then all but the top two candidates drop out of the election and the second choice votes from the eliminated candidates were counted. This is what happened in the previous election of 2005. Linda Arkley and John Harrison held the top two positions, but as neither had 50% of the vote, the second choice votes of Dr Joan Harvey and Robert Nigel Batten were added to their current tallies. As a result, John Harrison won overall, even though Linda Arkley held the most votes after the first round.
