North Stoke is a village on the Thames, in the civil parish of Crowmarsh in the English county of Oxfordshire, a little to the north of Littlestoke and South Stoke.
[edit] Notable buildings
The Church of England parish church was built in the 1230s when Robert de Esthall was the vicar. His memorial slab (1274) may be seen in the chancel. The original tower collapsed in 1669 and a new one took over fifty years to build. There is a 13th century crusader chest and the remains of a Saxon piscina. Most notable, however, are the large number of 14th century wall paintings.
[edit] Famous people
- The Oscar-winning actor, Michael Caine, lived at the Rectory Farm House in North Stoke.
- The contralto Dame Clara Butt lived in North Stoke.
- Rock vocalist Ian Gillan, formerly of Deep Purple, used to live in the country house that is now the Springs Hotel. He had the guitar-shaped swimming pool built.
