North Lakes is a suburb north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the Moreton Bay Regional Council. North Lakes is located approximately 25km north of the Brisbane central business district. North Lakes has officially been named a suburb, gazetted by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water in March 2006. The suburb of Mango Hill has been approximately split in half forming the two suburbs. The suburb is mostly made up of newly developed housing.
The origin of the suburb name is from the name given to the estate development. [1]
The suburb includes an abundance of parklands, schools and shops and currently houses 8,000 people, with 25,000 projected by the end of the development. There are also many new facilities in the area, including the North Lakes Community Centre and the recently extended Westfield North Lakes. Major tenants of the shopping centre include Target, Coles, Big W, Woolworths, Myer and will include a cinema complex by 2008.
North Lakes Business Park started construction in 2007 and is planned to take 7 years to fully complete. It will ultimately create 5,000 jobs, cover 55 hectares and cost $130 million. Construction of a walk-over bridge crossing the Bruce Highway and leading onto a path/corridor that heads to the Dakabin railway station is also planned in the future; the walk/ride will be approximately 2.5km.
The suburb's state school, North Lakes State College, has two campuses. The Year 11-12 campus is known as the "Urban Learning Centre", and is located beside the Pathways centre in the Town centre. The $12 million project was completed December 2007. The campus leads state schooling in Queensland with the best facilities and most innovative learning.
Neighboring towns are: Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Deception Bay, Redcliffe.
