North Kelsey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
North Kelsey is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 959. Also within the parish is the small hamlet of North Kelsey Moor. It is near Caistor. The former RAF Caistor is mostly within the parish, and the concrete bases of three Thor IRBM launch pads remain.
North Kelsey has an Anglican church, All Hallows or St. Nicholas, a Methodist chapel, a village hall, a post office, a primary school and a couple of pubs. The New Mill windmill can also be seen.
The nearby village of Hibaldstow can be reached by crossing Hibaldstow Bridge, an iron lattice girder bridge built in 1889 that spans the River Ancholme with a 10 ton weight limit. The final stretch of the road leading to the bridge from North Kelsey, known as Starham Road, is not asphalted, has many pot holes and can be dangerous during adverse weather conditions as it runs along the river embankment. Peculiarly, The AA Route Planner service still recommends it as the best route between the two villages, instead of choosing the longer but most sensible alternative through Brigg.
A mixed tennis league bearing the name of North Kelsey was established in 1966. The League encompasses most of the tennis clubs in North Lincolnshire including some in the North East Lincolnshire Unitary Authority area. Not all of the clubs are affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association of Great Britain, but they all are run by interested players in the many villages that take part.
