North High School (Worcester, Massachusetts)

North High School located in Worcester,Massachusetts is a public 4-year high school and is one of five public high schools in Worcester,Ma. The current North High, located on Harrington Way, was built 38 years ago as a junior high school. It became North High in 1980 when the old North High on Salisbury Street was closed and sold to a private developer. There are approximately 1200 students that attend North and it a very diverse student body. Whites and Hispanics are just about even. Whites make up 40% of the population while Hispanics make up 34%. African-Americans are at 17% and Asians make up 8%. The mascot of North High is a polar bear and the colors are black,orange, and white. Rivals of North High include South High Community, Doherty Memorial High School, and Burncoat High Scool. North high offers a variety of extra-curricular activities such as clubs and sports. North High is most noted for their boys basketball team who won the district title in 2005. North High's building is known as being old and run down and a new High School is on the way and is anticipated to be ready in 2011. The school is on a estimated $72.8 million budget and is projected to be 225,00 square ft.The City Council gave the go-ahead to a new North High in 2000, when the cost was estimated at $50 million. But the project was slow to get off the ground and ran into problems when delays and rising construction costs pushed the price tag of the school to $78 million.
