North East Aircraft Museum
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
North East Aircraft Museum is a volunteer-run aviation museum in England situated on the site of the former RAF Usworth/Sunderland Airport, between Sunderland and Washington, Tyne and Wear.
The museum is open all year seven days a week and has nearly all of its exhibits under cover.
The museum relocated to Sunderland Airport in 1976 from its former home at Lambton Lion Park although no aircraft were kept at the Lion Park during this time. The museum moved to its current location in 1984 following the closure of the airfield to build the Nissan Car Factory.
[edit] Aircraft
Aircraft range from the diminutive Flying Flea to the mighty Avro Vulcan as well as some aircraft unique within Britain, though there are many examples spread across the world.
The only "dog" sabre F-86 D, the most numerous version of the famous Sabre fighter, the only F-84F on show (there is another on store with the RAF museum) and a former world absolute speed record holder (sadly without its wings) Mike Lithgow's Supermarine Swift F.4 prototype. It also has a Gill Airways Shorts 330.
