North Dakota 5 is a two-lane and 337 mile long east-west highway the hugs the northern border of the state and is never farther than 16-17 miles south of the border. The Eastern terminus is located about four miles east of Joliette at the Red River where the highway transitions to Minnesota State Highway 175. The Western Terminus is at North Dakota's western border about 12 miles west of Fortuna where the highway transitions to Montana Highway 5.
