NC 90 is a sixty-six mile North Carolina State Highway. It is one of the few State Highways in North Carolina with an unpaved portion.The unpaved portion is the first eight miles of the route in Caldwell County.

[edit] Current Route
The western terminus is in Edgemont (in Caldwell County) at an intersection with Edgemont Rd. (SR 1420), Roseboro Rd. (Pisgah National Forest FR 981) and Edgemont Church Pl. (SR 1358). The first eight miles of the highway are quite curvy and unpaved. [1]Sixty-six miles after its inception, NC 90 ends at US 21/64 in Statesville. Major towns that the highway serves are Lenoir and Taylorsville, North Carolina.[2]
[edit] Historical Info
- 1920s: NC 90 is formed, running from Raleigh to Columbia, NC. That road is now US 64.
- 1928: The current route of NC 90 begins to form as it is extended through Statesville to NC 18 in Lenoir.
- 1933: The eastern segment of NC 90 is cut off, leaving NC 90 to end at its present location in Statesville.
- 1960s: NC 90 is truncated to end in its present location today: Edgemont. Some of this section was never paved. The former stretch from Edgemont to US 221 is now the unpaved Edgemont Rd. (SR 1420, Pisgah National Forest FR 45, and SR 1514 in Avery County).
