Normanville, South Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Normanville (postcode 5204) is a small rural town near the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. It is situated next to the mouth of the Bungala River.
It is 1 km (0.5 miles) south of Carrickalinga, which has lovely beaches and is a popular beach holiday destination, and 3 km west of Yankalilla. The town has a rich heritage and was foundered by a dentist named Dr Robert Norman in 1850 on his wealthy property. He then proceeded to create a small town by opening the Normanville Hotel on 1851 and a church soon after.
The Normanville Hotel then became the host of the first district council meeting for the area. The town eventually grew to become a successful wheat exporting area, using the neaby jetty at the current Normanville Beach as a port for ships coming and going. However after the opening of Adelaide as the capital city, it lost it's prior importance. Although there was no longer a dominant wheat trade in the area any more, the beautiful town continued to blossom on a tourist industry, using the Normanville Beach, old historic buildings and the Normanville Hotel as main focal points for visitors. The town eventually grew a successful shopping center, a kiosk, large residential areas and a string of high quality shops down the main street.
The town is currently a great holiday destination and has plenty of options for great food and accommodation
Normanville is situated near the Fleurieu Wine Region.
