Norman Paterson School of International Affairs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs was established in 1965 at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, with a grant from Senator Norman McLeod Paterson. It is widely considered to be Canada's premier school for the study of International Affairs.[citation needed] In 2007, researchers in foreign affairs at the College of William and Mary in Virginia conducted a survey of foreign affairs scholars in Canada and the US and included a question regarding the "five best terminal masters programs in international relations for a student who wants to pursue a policy career.[1]. According to the 110 Canadian foreign affairs scholars surveyed, NPSIA ranked tied for second with Georgetown University. NPSIA, nor any other Canadian school, made the list of the best programs according to the American respondents.
It is also a founding member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs and home to the Simon Reisman Chair in Trade Policy, and the William and Jeanie Barton Chair in International Affairs.[citation needed]
NPSIA has the only APSIA certified, professional Master of Arts Degree Program in International Affairs in Canada.[citation needed] NPSIA has also recently added Canada's only Ph.D program in that area.[citation needed] It also offers a unique joint MA/LLB program in co-operation with the University of Ottawa.
The MA program is organized around seven thematic clusters of study:
- Human security and development
- International trade
- Global political economy
- International institutions and global governance
- International development
- Intelligence and national security
- Conflict studies
From the NPSIA website:
With the changes and advancements in today's society, the world has, indeed, become a smaller and more connected world. Globally, we are increasingly aware, informed and affected by both national and international issues.
The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs strives to promote an enriched understanding of the challenges affecting our world through the Master of Arts Degree Program and our Ph.D. Program in International Affairs.
NPSIA's premier graduate programs offer an innovative, interdisciplinary graduate education; endeavoring to provide students with both a strong academic foundation, as well an exceptional learning experience beyond the classroom.
