Norfolk Southern Crescent Corridor

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Crescent Corridor is a proposed railroad corridor that will be operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway. The line will run along Interstate 81. It will be a major Intermodal Corridor running between Louisiana and New Jersey.

It would expand the entire NS network from the Northeast and to the Southeast. It is expected that the majority of cargo along the corridor would be intermodals and improvement to take more than hundreds of thousands more truckloads off the interstates to not only relieve traffic conjestion, but also help the environment by removing trucks from long-haul transport.

The corridor is 1,400 miles long and 28 new trains daily would be expected to go into service along with improvements to railyards along the corridor. A cost estimate is $2 billion. Norfolk Southern would expand and upgrade existing rail lines along the corridor to accommodate more faster trains and also purchase new locomotives and railcars and build new terminals.

Construction on the first phase is expected to start sometime in 2008 with it being completed by 2009 and also improve intermodal services on the entire network. The entire corridor is expected to be completed by 2013.
