Norfolk Island has competed in six of the eighteen previous Commonwealth Games, from 1986.

A bowler from Norfolk Island, Carmen Anderson, won a bronze medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in the Women's Singles Bowls. With one medal, Norfolk Island is now (2008) fifty-fourth equal in the All-time tally of medals.

Malcolm Champion of New Zealand was born on Norfolk Island. He won a gold medal for Australasia in the 1912 Summer Olympics, swimming in the 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay
