Nordostrundingen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nordostrundingen (corrupted from Danish: Nordøstrundingen), is a headland on Greenland and the easternmost point in North America. At 12°08'W it is the most easterly point of land in North America, as well as the most easterly point of land in both the Americas (North and South America). It is located at the northeastern end of the island. Nordøstrundingen is actually further east than the westernmost point in Europe, on western Iceland.

Because Greenland is not part of North America politically, some people believe the most easterly point of the continent is the easternmost point in Canada; Cape Spear located at 52°37'W near St. John's, Newfoundland. However, both of these headlands are actually located on islands associated with North America, and thus neither is located on the continent itself. Semisopochnoi Island, Alaska is technically in the eastern hemisphere at 179°46'E and thus could also be considered the easternmost point in North America. Cape St. Charles on the Labrador Peninsula is the easternmost point of continental North America.
