Description

Icon for "No PNGs" (image files), using international barred-circle symbol.
This image is intentionally stored in GIF format (most international GIF patents have expired), to be displayed where PNG-format should not, or could not, be used:

  • GIF supports animation features not yet available in PNG format.
  • Some browsers have trouble displaying various PNG-format images, whereas this GIF-format image could be displayed by those browsers, since GIF is an older, universal image format.
  • Due to transparency issues, some PNG-format maps display the checkerboard grid pattern (like a watermark) behind ocean areas of maps, whereas the GIF version displays solid ocean areas.
  • Also in MediaWiki applications (such as Wikimedia Commons), GIF files often display as 3x times faster than PNG files, and that speed might be an issue (especially for large maps with small detailed markings).
  • The NOAA NHC charts are GIFs and are regularly updated with the new ones. Uploading as a GIF is easer then having to continually convert them.
