Shown here is the percentage in each country which responded that "they believe there is a god".

While it is difficult to quantify the prevalence of nontheism in the world, it is clear that the percentage of people in Europe who believe in god is significantly lower than most of the rest of the world. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, former and present Communist states, and to a lesser extent, the United States also show higher levels of atheism and nontheism. A 1995 survey attributed to the Encyclopedia Britannica indicates that the non-religious make up about 14.7% of the world's population, and atheists around 3.8%. (Read more...)

The pansy has long been the symbol of freethought, originally being used in the literature of the American Secular Union in the late 1800s. The reasoning behind the pansy being the symbol of freethought lies in both the flower's name and appearance. The pansy derives its name from the French word pensée, which means "thought"; it was so named because the flower resembles a human face, and in the month of August it nods forward as if deep in thought.

Procedure

The nomination process here is relaxed, but articles that meet the featured article or featured picture requirements are more likely to gain support.

Nominating articles

  1. Find a picture or animation related to nontheism that you think is very good. It need not be a current Featured Article or Featured picture, but if it is, it could only help the nomination.
    • If the article was previously nominated for featured status, or if it has been on peer review, try to resolve as many of the remaining objections as possible.
  2. In the nominations section below, add a third level section header with the linked page title as the section name (===[[Page title]]===). Below this new header, add your reasons for nomination and sign your nomination with ~~~~.

Supporting and objecting

  • If you approve of a nomination, write "Support" followed by your reasons.
    • A nomination is considered a vote in support, so nominators don't need to add another vote to their nominations.
  • If you oppose a nomination, write "Oppose" followed by the reasons for your objection. Where possible, objections should provide a specific rationale that can be addressed.
    • To withdraw an objection, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.
