The Nomad Theatre is an amateur theatre in East Horsley, in the South East of England. Whilst the Nomad Players, who own the theatre, were founded in 1934, the existing theatre was opened in 1998. The new theatre was partly funded from the Lottery, via the Arts Council England[1], with other finance raised by the Nomads and local businesses.
An older building, also called the Nomad Theatre, converted from a barn, had previously existed on the same site since 1957. That building went dark in 1996, Chorus of Disapproval being the last show performed in it. It was then demolished to make way for the current building.
The theatre is affiliated with the Little Theatre Guild and the Foundation for Sports and the Arts. It also runs the Play in a Week[2] scheme. Apart from the (adult) Nomad Players, there a also two youth subsections, the Nomes (for under 16's) and the Young Nomads (for those aged 16-25)[3].
On average the theatre puts on eight plays in any given year[4] , of which at least one is a musical and two showcase the two youth departments exclusively. Plays are usually directed, produced and cast within from the Nomad Players membership.
To date, two notable actors have begun their careers as (young) Nomads - Lia Williams (Dirty Weekend, Oleanna and countless British television appearances) and Huw Bevan (Family Affairs).
