Wikipedia:No Moral Code
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The goal of wikipedia is to build a free-content encyclopedia. Other than those requirements which are believed to be necessary to build a reliable encyclopedia (WP:NPOV, WP:NOR, WP:V, etc), and those needed to comply with the law; Wikipedia does not subscribe to a particular morality, ideology, or worldview.
- Morality is not a concern for an encyclopedia, except as an aspect of human culture to document, and is inherently a biased POV.
- Wikipedia is a place where people with different, if any, definitions of and opinions on good and evil work together to build an encyclopedia that is:
-
- Factual.
- Informative.
- NPOV.
- Wikipedia editors not should strive to be actively good, evil or neutral in relation to morality, they should simply strive to neutrally express human knowledge as clearly as possible.
- Nevertheless wikipedia should not be needlessly harmful to its subjects, as this could hurt wikipedia's image and cause legal problems. Nothing should be contributed to wikipedia that does not possess encyclopedic value. However, this is rarely an issue, as nothing can be added to wikipedia that is not already public knowledge, as per WP:Notability and WP:V. Remember that rumor should not given the same credibility as fact, and may not need to be included at all.
