[edit] History

The tour began on January 25, 1999 in Oakland, California, and played 34 shows across Canada and the United States. It was the first Rolling Stones tour in twenty years where they only played at arenas and was inspired by several arena shows during the Bridges to Babylon Tour.

The No Security Tour was the brainchild of Mick Jagger and especially Keith Richards. They decided to do an arena-only tour with crowds less than 20,000 after the world wide enormous Bridges to Babylon Tour with crowds of up to 100,000. The Stones insisted upon a smaller gig that was closer to the audience, with less effects and excess, that concentrated on the music and band. They eventually went forward with the project to support their new album No Security - a live album of Bridges to Babylon Tour recordings.

After rehearsing for twelve days in San Francisco California, the No Security Tour began on January 25, 1999 in Oakland, California at the Oakland Arena. The band played 33 shows in North America and one at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. They played to a total of 574,300 people on the road with the largest crowd of 20,100 being at Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio and the smallest number of 12,600 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The final show played at the San Jose Arena in San Jose, California, on April 20.

Though No Security album sales were less than expected due to it being live, the tour was a favourite among fans dying to see the Stones as they used to be - back to basics. After this tour, they commenced a brief tour of Europe called The Summer European Tour.

[edit] The show

The stage was a stripped down basic structure with less effects and excess than the phenomenal stage of the Bridges to Babylon Tour which travelled the world. It was an intimate, closer stage which played to smaller audiences in arenas across both countries. The dynamic stage allowed 360 degree views from ticket holders. There were no light shows, little fireworks and basic architecture unlike the prior outstanding concert that broke records across the globe. However, in place of this lack of effects was more music and interaction with the band. It was the best attempt at re-capturing what The Rolling Stones once were in the days of the music.

It was immediately noticed that the setlist was longer than at the Bridges to Babylon Tour and featured a wide range of songs in their career - not just the hits. The concerts featured an impressive range of songs from various parts of the bands enormous catalogue. Major hits such as "It's Only Rock'n Roll", "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up" were frequent along with lesser known songs such as "Live With Me", "Route 66" and "Crazy Mama" at every venue. The band played several songs from their recent studio album Bridges to Babylon such as "Saint Of Me" and "Out Of Control" and also some tour debuts such as "Shine a Light". Almost all of the concerts burst open with "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and ended with a two song encore. One of the band's most enduring numbers, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" was not played at all.

Most shows ran from roughly 9:00pm to 11:00pm. Warm up acts included: Bryan Adams, Jonny Lang, Wide Mouth Mason, Big Sugar, The Flys, The Corrs, Goo Goo Dolls, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Sugar Ray. Tickets were more expensive than previous tours. Gold Seating tickets (Front section) were as little as $75 and general admission as low as $40.
