"No" is a Latin pop song written by Shakira and Lester Méndez for Shakira's sixth studio album, Fijación Oral Vol. 1 (2005). The song features a prominent guitar riff and was released as the album's second single in late 2005 (see 2005 in music). "No" topped the charts in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Spain.

[edit] Background and chart performance

The lyrics chronicle a woman's effort in trying to tell her boyfriend that she no longer wants to be involved in a relationship and that separating is best for the two of them.

"No" was released after the worldwide success of Shakira's previous single "La Tortura" (2005). In Latin America, the single was another number-one hit for shakira (her second since the creation of the Latin America Top 40). It debuted at number 29[1] that week Shakira was topping the chart for 14 weeks in a row with "La Tortura", Shakira repaced herself from the top 7 weeks later. "No" spent 11 weeks on the top and ranks as the fourth most played song in Latin America.[2]

It reached number one in Colombia (for fourteen non-consecutive weeks) and Spain (for one week only), but was only a minor success outside the Spanish market. "No" entered the Canadian BDS Airplay Chart and the U.S. Hot 100, but did not receive substantial airplay. The single was certified gold in U.S. for the 100,000 downloads of the song.

The song's music video was directed by Jaume de Laiguana and was filmed in black-and-white. While the video does not closely follow the theme of the song, in many scenes Shakira is portrayed as sad as tears roll down her face. She appears to be located at a defunct train station and is surrounded by several rail tracks and pullies, some of the latter which are used for her to sit in. Towards the end of the video, one of the small wooden pullies falls off the track and into water beneath a cliff. Throughout the video, Shakira is engaged in building butterfly wings, seemingly as a metaphor for finding the strength to fly on her own, away from the destructive relationship, etc. At the closing moments of the video, she stands at the waters edge, ready to take flight, but does not go through with it and walks away, smiling slightly. The video reached number-one on most Latin American countdowns and in Spain. This video can be seen on Oral Fixation Volumes 1 & 2 Bonus DVD.
