"A Clue: No" is the thirteenth episode of the 2006 Robin Hood television series, made by Tiger Aspect Productions for BBC One. It aired on Saturday December 30, 2006. Its title quotes a line spoken frequently by the Sheriff throughout this series, and which appears three times in this episode, spoken twice by the Sheriff and once by Robin. It is the second part of the first series's only two-parter, and the end of the first series.
[edit] Plot
The pre-credits sequence reprises the final scenes of the previous episode, with Marian's death and the Sheriff taunting Robin as he arrives with some soldiers.
Little John, Much and Djaq prepare to meet the Sheriff and Gisborne's forces, but the fight only commences when Robin begins brutally shooting down the enemy soldiers, enraged by Marian's death. In the face of Robin's fierce fighting and the unexpected return of Allan-a-Dale and Will, who also join in the fight, Gisborne orders a retreat, stopping only to have Pitt the physician killed.[1] The outlaws then return to the cave and begin making preparations to bury Marian. Robin admits to the gang that he loved her. At this point Allan-a-Dale, having noticed something, says "I'm not being funny, but she's breathing." When Marian regains consciousness Djaq realizes that Pitt had tried to poison her with hemlock, not realizing that she might survive.
The outlaws return Marian to Knighton Hall just before Gisborne arrives to see her. Once Sir Edward manages to satisfy Gisborne that Marian is ill, he asks Robin to help him and the other nobles to protect King Richard when he comes to Nottingham on the Saturday. Robin refuses because he wants to stop Marian's wedding. Meanwhile, back at Nottingham Castle, the Sheriff reveals his scheme to Gisborne; the king coming to Nottingham is really an impostor, who will help draw the rebellious nobles out of hiding to be eliminated.
After going to see Marian, who is resigned to marrying Gisborne, Robin continues refusing to help Edward, going so far as to insult Much so that he will leave. The outlaws, apart from Robin, meet with the nobles in secret to discuss how they will protect the King from what they assume will be an assassination attempt by the Sheriff. When Saturday comes, Marian takes leave of Edward and goes to the wedding at Locksley Hall alone, meeting an enthusiastic Guy, while the outlaws and the people of Nottingham wait for the King to arrive. At the last minute Much decides to leave and find Robin and encounters the King's retinue, only to realize that the "King" is an impostor. When the "King" arrives at Nottingham he has the Sheriff arrested and declares that "French evidence" will be given; one by one the nobles will go to a certain room if they wish to testify against the Sheriff. The first noble goes to the room for testifying and tells the clerk that he will give evidence against the Sheriff. However, the clerk reveals himself as the Sheriff and kills the noble.
Just as Marian's wedding is underway Much arrives and yells for all to hear that the King is an impostor - Robin, who has been leaving Nottinghamshire for good, hears the yelling. Much also declares Gisborne a traitor for trying to kill the real King. Gisborne doesn't deny the accusations when Marian asks him, but claims that he will be a better person for the marriage. Marian punches Gisbourne, using the wedding ring as a knuckleduster. She runs out of the chapel and meets Robin, riding to her rescue, and they leave for Nottingham Castle to save Edward.
As Edward prepares to declare evidence against the Sheriff, Robin, Marian and Much arrive at the castle and split up to enter (but not before Robin and Marian exchange a kiss). When the "clerk" asks Edward if he wishes to testify against the Sheriff, Robin arrives, pins the Sheriff down with arrows and replies "a clue: no". With Edward safe, Much rallies the outlaws against the impostor King and they try to make their escape, only for the Sheriff to threaten Much at knife point. With some fancy archery Robin saves Much, subdues the Sheriff and the outlaws make their escape...
