No. 38 Squadron RAF

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No. 38 Squadron of the Royal Air Force was formed in 1916 and was disbanded for the last time in 1967. During the Second World War it operated out of RAF Marham, Norfolk, flying Vickers Wellington strategic bombers. During this time it was commanded by Wing Commander Bowles.

One of its members, Squadron Leader Eric Foster, was shot down over the Black Forest on 14/15 June 1940. He escaped German captivity, including in the notorious Spangenberg Castle and Stalag Luft III, seven times, working on several escape tunnels. He was eventually repatriated to the UK by feigning insanity, an act which he felt ashamed about for the rest of his life. On return to the UK he was refused permission to resume flying duties, but went on to be adjutant of RAF Innsworth.
