On December 8, 1981, 13 coal miners lost their lives as the result of a methane explosion at the Grundy Mining Company's No. 21 mine in Whitwell, Tennessee.

Many have speculated the explosion was caused by cigarette smoking, as several of the miners had cigarettes and butane lighters on their persons.
