The NO2ID coalition was formed in 2004 to campaign against the United Kingdom government's plans to introduce UK ID Cards and the associated National Identity Register, which they believe to have negative implications on privacy.

[edit] History
NO2ID arose initially from various discussion groups to become an entity in its own right. Its initial form was to act as an umbrella group including staff and officers of Liberty, Charter 88 and Privacy International. NO2ID branded material first appeared in 2002, published and paid for by Liberty and Charter 88. Its support is broad based including political parties on the political left (such as Respect and the Green Party of England and Wales), in the centre (such as the Liberal Democrats) and on the right (such as the United Kingdom Independence Party), as well as civil liberties groups such as Liberty, Privacy International and stand.[1]
[edit] Organisation
NO2ID is a UK-wide organisation. It is also setting up national and regional groups across the UK, one of the first being NO2ID Scotland.
As of July 2005, NO2ID has signed up over 10,000 people, through PledgeBank, who have pledged to refuse to accept an identity card and contribute £10 to a fund to provide legal support for those prosecuted for resisting registration. A second identical pledge was launched to try and double the number of people committed to resisting registration [2] but this failed to gain traction. A full list of supporters can be found at [3].
[edit] Campaign
In May 2006 NO2ID launched the "Renew for Freedom" campaign [1], urging passport holders to renew their passports to delay being entered on the National Identity Register. This follows the comment made by Charles Clarke in the House of Commons that "anyone who feels strongly enough about the linkage [between passports and the ID scheme] not to want to be issued with an ID card in the initial phase will be free to surrender their existing passport and apply for a new passport before the designation order takes effect" [4].
In summer 2006 NO2ID also launched a youth section, Youth Against ID, to increase awareness among young people about what they perceive are the dangers of the ID cards scheme and the National Identity Register.
On September 18, 2006 the NO2ID- campaign started an appeal for tracking down the locations of the new outsourced Passport / National Identity Register "personal interview" registration centres. Furthermore it told that the government plans to start face to face interviews for first time passport applicant from autumn 2006. The project named 'Authentication by Interview' (AbI) was due to launch in October 2006. The campaign wants to locate the 69 interview centres. Over the coming months these centres will be a focus of their protest against the ID card scheme. It has now set up local groups in 27 of the 69 locations and many of these groups have already brought the issue to the attention of the local media. It asks the people in the locations that they do not yet have a group to set one up.
