Noël Carroll (1947- ) is an American philosopher considered an authority for his aesthetic analysis of films. He works in general on philosophy of art, theory of media and also philosophy of history. He is at present professor at Temple University. As a journalist, he has also published a number of articles in the Chicago Reader, ARtforum, In These Times, Dance Magazine, Soho Weekly News and The Village Voice.
Perhaps his most well-known theory is that the past performances of actors contribute to their star persona, which can be utilized by the viewer to help flesh out other aspects of future character roles. He claims that although suspension of disbelief is essential to a full movie going experience, one must exit the fiction operator at times to comprehend all aspects of a film. For example, while watching in a film based on World War II, one can legitimately reference true history and assume that a soldier wearing a swastika is part of the German Nazi regime. Likewise, Harrison Ford's forceful portrayal of the President of the United States in Air Force One draws from his star persona built from his rebellious, individualistic roles has Han Solo and Indiana Jones.
