Niu Valley Middle School is situated in the heart of Niu Valley, a quiet East Honolulu community. The school serves the Hawaiʻi Kai, Kuliʻouʻou, Niu Valley, Wailupe Valley, and ʻĀina Haina areas. Niu Valley Middle is the home of the Lancers. The school colors are red and yellow. The school motto is "Be the best that you can be."
Niu Valley first opened its doors in 1955 with just the seventh grade and a staff of only six members. Since then, it has grown from one building to 15 and now accommodates approximately 500 students each year. Up until 1974, the school served 7th to 9th graders, but with the construction of Kaiser High School, all ninth graders were moved to the high school level.
Niu Valley is proud to continuously demonstrate high academic achievement. Through the cooperation of students, faculty, and staff, they strive to ensure a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment that nurtures young minds and encourages development. The school's outstanding curriculum and student activities program, which incorporates grade level teams, an advisee-advisor program, exploratory courses, intramural and extramural athletics, and a variety of co-curricular activities, involves the entire school population working together to make a difference. Niu Valley belongs to the Kaiser complex which also includes ʻĀina Haina Elementary, Hahaʻione Elementary, Kaiser High, Kamiloiki Elementary, Koko Head Elementary, and Wailupe Valley Elementary. The school was again accredited in 2001 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for a period of six years.
Niu Valley's vision is "to instill, foster, and share the love and joy of learning." The school's mission and purpose is "to teach and nurture early adolescents, mindful of their unique needs as they mature from childhood to young adulthood by providing a safe, healthy environment; encouraging respect and trust amongst the members of the school community; developing self-respect; opening lines of communication amongst the school community; fostering collaborative efforts and teamwork; developing responsible citizens; and providing curriculum that develops skills and challenges students to live in the 21st century."
The Friends of Niu Valley provides a vital parent/community support and advisory role toward our school's improvement efforts. The school's SCBM council actively addresses the school's vision and mission statement through its collaborative efforts toward school improvement, renewal, and educational reform.
