Nitijela is the name given to the lower house of the Marshall Islands' legislature. In terms of the Micronesian system, this is where the majority of the legislative power resides, although it is the lower of two houses in a bicameral system. 33 senators are elected from the 24 districts of the country, elected by universal suffrage of all adults over 18 years of age.
