Ram Gopal Varma was hailed by critics as being back to form after producing a series of duds. Amitabh Bachchan's role received a lot of acclaim with many critics stating in their reviews that only he could pull off a role as complex as this. Jiah Khan in her debut role was also lavishly praised.

The film however did not become the box office hit it was expected to be mostly due to the pre World Cup dull phase as well as the mature and controversial storyline.
